FAI - Fondo Ambiente Italiano (the National Trust for Italy) is a non-profit foundation which works tirelessly to protect Italy’s extraordinary cultural, artistic and natural heritage.

Founded in 1975, FAI is modelled on the National Trust of England, Wales and Northern Ireland and promotes a culture of respect for Italy’s nature, art, history and traditions. Every day, FAI protects a unique heritage that is an integral part of Itay’s cultural roots by protecting, restoring, enhancing and opening to the public monuments and natural sites.

FAI is positioned to protect special places acquired by donation or bequest or granted to FAI on concession and make them accessible to everyone.

In addition, FAI promotes several communication campaigns with the objective of raising awareness of the importance of local heritage and participates in the national debate on environmental issues and cultural heritage.

The Guardians of Italian Heritage was established in 2018 to provide strong and tangible support for a great project: protecting the most beautiful, untouched and hidden parts of Italy by financing FAI's mission.This group of generous patrons and companies – imbued with high ideals and sensitive to the values of culture, art and nature – will enable FAI to achieve significant results, guaranteeing solidity and making the most of Italy’s cultural heritage.

More than 40 years from its establishment, FAI continues to grow following three main objectives of its 10-year Strategic Plan:

• Restore properties located across Italy and open them to the public;
• Manage them sustainably in both economic and environmental terms;
• Enhance these special sites so that they can tell their story and become “happy places” in which to spend high-quality leisure time.

In parallel, FAI wants to boost its commitment to raising awareness by bringing citizens, institutions and businesses into contact with artistic and environmental heritage, as well as educating an increasing number of young people on the importance of loving and respecting the landscape and the beauty that surround us.

FAI’s governance structure in composed of the President, three Vice-Presidents, the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee, the Board of Trustees, the Board of Auditors and the Appointments and Participation Committee. The President, Vice-Presidents, Trustees, Auditors and Board Members do not have a specific mandate and receive no remuneration.
